I was always kind of an outcast because I didn't want to go along with what was popular. I never drank or went to parties in high school, and I was astounded that people kept doing it even after classmates were dying off. I didn't understand why people would get high so they could act stupid, or spend money on drugs instead of CDs or a new basketball or something. I lamented the fact that MTV played decent, beautiful videos by respectable artists for about 48 hours after 9/11, then went right back to playing filth so they could fill their pockets. I hate that they only put garbage on network television and "hip-hop" radio stations.
I've come to understand that these things happen because we're all a part of what I call The Great Deception (see the song by the same name or "So Beautiful" for further info), and I needed a way to express my disgust with it. I needed a way to call out to my people and say that we don't have to be slaves to the mainstream mentality. I needed a way to say that this world can be beautiful. That we can be beautiful.
That way is hip-hop. It's the only way I know.
